Studying and earnings-related allowance
Depends on the situation. Earnings-related allowance can be paid for a period of studies if:
- You meet the general requirements for getting earnings-related allowance
- The employment authority considers your studies to be part-time or has issued a statement that you can study full-time while receiving unemployment benefits
Always contact the employment authority first if you want to start studying while unemployed or if you are still studying when you register as a jobseeker.
The employment authority assesses how studies affect unemployment benefits and gives a statement to the Unemployment Fund.
You cannot get student financial aid and earnings-related allowance at the same time, except in certain situations where your studies begin or end in the middle of the month.
If you have been granted student financial aid for the same period as earnings-related allowance, contact Kela.
Also, always remember to notify the employment authority if you are starting studying or if you are still studying when registering as a jobseeker.
The fact that you are not getting student financial aid does not in itself entitle you to earnings-related allowance.
You can only apply for earnings-related allowance if you have registered as an unemployed jobseeker with the employment authority and are not a full-time student.
The employment authority assesses if your studies are full-time. If you are considered unemployed and meet the general conditions for getting earnings-related allowance, you may be entitled to the benefit.
