Job alternation leave will be discontinued starting from 1 August 2024
23.05.2024
On 22 May 2024, the Finnish Parliament approved the legislative change for the discontinuation of job alternation leave starting from 1 August 2024.
Job alternation leave refers to a situation where you take a leave from work for up to six months. For the duration of your leave, the employer hires an unemployed jobseeker. No salary is paid during job alternation leave. However, you can apply for job alternation compensation from your unemployment fund.

Job alternation leave is still possible until 31 July 2024
You can still commence job alternation leave before the legislative change is implemented on 1 August 2024. The last possible start date is 31 July 2024.
The job alternation leave is considered to have started by 31 July 2024 when:
- the job alternation leave agreement has been submitted to the TE Office no later than 31 July 2024
- your substitute's employment begins no later than 31 July 31 2024
If you commence your job alternation leave no later than 31 July 2024, you can take it for the full agreed duration of 100-180 calendar days. Starting from 1 August 2024, it is no longer possible to start job alternation leave.
